The history of K-9 Capers:
Youth began to congregate at a local animal-rescue group for which I was volunteering. I noticed after the basic chores were done, the youth became bored and wanted to do more with the animals. Since the animals, particularly the dogs needed to socialize and trained, we began a clicker-training program.
Clicker training was a new method I had just learned in Florida at a conference held at Sea World. To my amazement, killer whales to birds were being clicker trained not only for performances, but also for general handling and veterinary care. After many years in the humane education and rescue field, I could see clicker training was the safest, most humane method I had ever witnessed. After bringing back the new method of training, we opened the program up to more youth until we ran out of space! It was decided then to expand the programs to help youth with problems such as conflict resolution, empathy and basic character development such as respect and responsibility. The all encompassing program would be Katie’s Kidz . Our future vision is to add a Ranch to house the equine and canine programs to help the youth.
The non-profit program Katie’s Kidz is dedicated to my mother, Katie Brower, whose strength was her beauty and her faith, were her pearls. Her fight with cancer opened my eyes to what lies in all of us- Champions of grace, if we wish.
